What You Need to Know About Laser Hair Removal

No two people are alike.
It’s important to chat with our laser specialist about your personalized plan, because they need all the details to make sure you see success. Just remember it’s not a one-size-fits-all approach to laser hair removal. So ask questions in your complimentary consultation:

  • Where on your body are you getting rid of unwanted hair?
  • How many treatments will you need?
  • If you have a tendency to scar, they need to know that.
  • Do you have a higher risk for any side effects?

You don’t need to grow out your unwanted hair beforehand. This is not like a wax, so no need to grow out your hair in the targeted area. Speaking of a wax, if you’ve had a wax recently, laser hair removal may not be best. So be sure to mention that to your provider.

Your hair and skin type does matter. Darker hair follicles are actually easier to treat than blonde, white, or gray hair. That’s because the laser targets the hair’s pigment. So darker colors are easier to see.

Do not tan (outdoors or indoors, or use sunless tanners).
All of the above. The sun will be harsh on your freshly-lasered self. So be thoughtful of direct sunlight. Indoor tanning is never recommended, and the tanning lotion can be damaging to your vulnerable hair follicles.

Stay out of the sun prior to treatment.
You cannot receive this treatment if you are tan, or sunburnt. Note: This is why the fall/winter timeframe is ideal for laser hair removal. Make sure you discuss what to do before laser hair removal with your provider.

Yes, there can be side effects.
Remember, this is a laser that’s targeting your hair follicles, so there will naturally be some redness and potential swelling post-treatment.

If you want to see results, you have to be consistent.
The number of treatments you’ll need depends on the location, and the condition of your skin. Three to eight treatments is common, because hair grows in cycles, not all hair is affected in the first treatment.

The most important of the above is that no two people are alike, and it’s important to discuss your treatment plan with your provider at your consultation. If you have questions, we’re happy to answer them, just call (585) 272-0700!
